I can’t adult today! — and that’s ok!
I can’t adult today!
No, seriously. I can’t. I’m tired.
I have been giving it my all for a while now, and today, right now, I…AM…TIRED!
Tired of making sure everything in my life is functioning as it is supposed to, which means smoothly if you are a 95% perfectionist like me. Everything should move like a well-oiled machine. The kids, their schooling. The job, the boss, the career plans. The house, its upkeep, the bills, groceries, and of course the meals. Everything is always vying for my attention: simultaneously! But today; sorry, no can do!
The comforting this is, I am sure I am not the only one who sometimes feels this way. If I was, we would not be seeing so many “It’s ok not to be ok” posts making their rounds on social media. We have all had a moment when we’ve felt tired — more so now in 2021 when the lockdowns and the self-isolating have lost their novelty and the day-to-day routine has become mundane. Particularly, if you are also working from home. You’re lucky if your workspace is totally separate from your living space, because at least that way, you will feel like you have “somewhere to go” on a daily basis.
So the truth is, it’s ok not to be ok. It’s ok to acknowledge when you are tired of putting on a brave face and reminding your family and friends that it could be worse, so “we should be thankful for what we have.” Trust me, it’s ok. But what’s more important is to realize when you need to take some time out for yourself to rest, recuperate, refuel and reset. You are not alone. The pandemic has affected all of us in many different ways, and we are all coping the best we can. Taking care of yourself is of utmost importance because you cannot care for others if you are not strong. So ahead; block off your calendar. Take some time off work. Make sure there’s food in the fridge, and just veg out.
Or, if you are like me, I plan to order take-out from my local restaurants for the entire weekend. That way I support the local business AND I don’t have to cook or do dishes. My books, my couch and my Nextflix/Amazon Prime Video are going to be my most favourite companions this weekend.
How do you reset yourself back to adulting?
